The defense of the KPFA and Pacifica broadcast platform is critical to the people of the Bay Area and the country. The imminent threat to all media voices that challenges the fascist government is real. Techno fascist billionaires are taking over CBS, CNN and trying to take over Paramount to make it like Fox.
KPFA was established by anti-war activists to oppose war and imperialism and we must continue this historic mission.
The attacks on Black representation in the South and threat of martial law and likely ICE raids on polling booths during this upcoming election are a threat to KPFA and all the people of this country.
KPFA and Pacifica need to build deeper links with the trade union movement, environmental and immigrant rights groups and build a working people’s broadcast platform. I will work to get more financial support from labor which is fighting for living wages and against union busting and billionaires who want to use AI to eliminate all workers. We need education on AI & tech and how it is being used by the state and billionaires to destroy our democracy and lives.
I support a multi-media platform covering May Day, Women’s Day, Juneteenth and streaming them live.
KPFA must expand local community programming with regular news groups contributing from the South Bay, Peninsula, Central Valley, North Bay and San Francisco. I will support holding town hall meetings in these communities to hear what issues they want covered and build support groups in each of these regions that can support KPFA.
We need a committee at KPFA to provide information and link all these immigrant activists groups together building on our media platform. We need to defend our reporters who are facing increasing attacks and should have supported KPFA reporter Frank Sterling who was targeted, beaten and arrested for his reporting.
The elimination of authority of the local station boards by our new bylaws is a dangerous centralization of power. We need more transparency and reports to the listeners by the KPFA management with questions from our members and listeners on the air.
Only building a strong democratic KPFA and Pacifica can withstand the growing repression and plans of the government to shut down all broadcast platforms that challenge war, xenophobia, racism, union busting and defense of our climate.
I am part of the Pacifica Mission Coalition which defends a democratic structure for Pacifica and are against the elimination of any oversight and control by local elected station boards.

I’m currently an LSB member at KPFA, also was elected to a term in the past decade. I am a lifelong Left Labor Socialist who has been a listener and supporter of KPFA since the early 1980’s. I also was a member of the Executive Board of ILWU Local #6, am currently on the State Executive Committee of the Peace and Freedom Party, I work with the Rescue Pacifica caucus to ensure that KPFA and Pacifica remain a true Left Media Alternative and a station governed by the listeners and Workers/ Staff. please vote for me and the other Pacifica Mission Coalition candidates.
To expand on my previous statement, I am strongly committed to KPFA/ Pacifica remaining a true Left alternative media that is democratically run, I was deeply involved in the mass campaign to save Pacifica in the late 1990s/ early 2000s and played a major role in getting my Union Local involved in that successful campaign. Later on i was a early member of the KPFA Program Council which had the novel idea that Listeners should play a major role in Programing decisions! Anyway, our council accomplished a lot during our brief existence and i would very much like to see it re-established, i am also deeply concerned about issues of War and Peace and am a member of East Bay DSA and Labor for Palestine. i do applaud the station’s principled Stance re Palestine and opposing US funding for the war on the Palestinian people, though Pacifica has been less consistent on other examples of Imperialist wars and i hope more dissenting voices on those conflicts will be heard on our airwaves . Last but not least i strongly support our Music Programming, From Calypso to Country, KPFA stands out as true alternative media.

This is Jack Neff and I am running for the office of Chair of the KPFK Local Station Board. KPFK’s Local Station Board is your protection that KPFK will remain on-air radio with voices of in-depth political speech on the internet for free.
KPFK is educational radio airing voices for peace, justice, liberation, self-inquiry, skepticism and real-time political struggles as they happen on live radio. KPFK is the only reliable radio media outlet giving regular air time to voices from incarcerated communities, the transportation-dependent, disabled, labor, feminists, Native-Americans, alternative cultures and to political progressive. KPFK is also changing the system by broadcasting censored voices in English and Spanish, airing voices of 2026 in Los Angeles. KPFK’s gumbo of programming educates policy wonks, techno geeks, youth from various immigrant backgrounds and has music shows for almost every taste. KPFK’s website archive uploads programming on the internet for 60 days after broadcast, making KPFK unique radio. .
The KPFK Local Station Board (“LSB”) is a democratic committee created under the bylaws of the Pacifica Foundation National Board (“PNB”) so listener-sponsors and KPFK staff can be involved in KPFK decision-making. In Southern California 98% of the commercial radio market is about corporate-controlled for-profit messages. KPFK is the exception to media censorship and KPFK’s LSB should support the PNB mission of a not-for-profit radio station, listener-supported and independent.
Voices against fossil fuels, racism, militarism, and the voice of actions for socialism and the struggle for liberation for targeted, persecuted communities are heard on KPFK and nowhere else. KPFK covers Voting Rights, Ecological Justice, La Raza, Black Lives Matter, Global Women’s Strike, American Indians, Peace in the Middle East.
KPFK is where everybody goes to hear voices nobody likes. In the words of George Carlin, whose 7 dirty words routine was aired on KPFK, if you don’t like it, that’s what the knobs on the front of the radio are for.
KPFK must continue with news and programming produced locally, and air controversial radio which welcomes disagreement.
On KPFK we hear journalists and activists who support causes for the climate and environment, people whose stories and statements get chopped up and taken out of context by the far-right hate voices on the internet, and also by the Washington Post, New York Times, Fox News and MSNBC. Such voices must have hours of programming each week on KPFK that can be heard nowhere else.

Having served as the LSB Secretary a few times in years past, I have the knowledge and experience to perform as required and deliver a faithful and useful record.
Pacifica Radio was formed with a Ford Foundation Grant in 1948, and many Quakers and C.O.s were part of the first Listener-Sponsored radio station on the left end of the FM dial, under the 1934 Communication Act. I maintain the (Quaker) Friends Meeting House in South Central L.A.
I will endeavor to continue a small part of that vision.

Pacifica Radio was founded by Pacifist Lewis Hill in 1949, with a focal platform against all global aggression and featuring a unique Non-Commercial Radio Format. In 1977 I attended Broadcasting School, Stratford, CT. I produced a 2 year Program ‘Politics Matters” for Public Access TV.
13 years ago KPFK boasted a Full Time News Dept., Community Events Calendar, Open Listener call-in lines, over $1 Million Fundraising capacity 3 times annually. We must reactivate Youth training, cut off rapacious fund drives. Seeking Listener members, not purchasers. Let us focus on local content, daily bread-and-butter issues, full signal area.
Through 2008, KPFK stood very pretty, fundraising capacity $1 Million in just a couple of weeks, 3 times yearly only. Attributed to the Station housing an engaged local Full Time News Dept. covering various community events while attracting a high yield of subscribers. My aim, with your help, is to return KPFK to its shining grassroots relevancy. Its programming Grid was vibrant with a local character.
We must experiment with new refreshing visions to replenish KPFK’s versatility, emphasis on youth participation. This would represent a shift in the right direction. Not to loose site on focus of every day bread/butter issues impacting our diverse Signal area.

I have worked for 40 years raising money for organizations as diverse as Amnestia Internacional (México), Oxfam International, Greenpeace, CHIRLA, Doctors Without Borders, PEN, Evergreen State College and CSLA Alumni Funds, Sierra Club, Peace Through Music, and so forth.
I have many tangible, concrete plans to attract more donations to KPFK, e.g. a KPFK table set up at well-attended events like Venice Beach on weekends, at CICLAVIA L.A. mass bike riding events, gay pride events, even at concerts by performers likely to appeal to KPFK listeners.
I am a retired elementary school teacher, with near-native fluency in español, 34 years teaching in LAUSD and very active in supporting Mexican and Central American immigrants. Able to find common ground with people of different progressive political ideologies. Good natured and believe in the power of laughter to bring people together.

As an anthropologist and independent scholar living in South L.A., I am committed to supporting the work of KPFK 90.7 unconditionally and continuing to collaborate with Nuestra Voz to represent the full diversity of faiths, ethnicities, and under-represented communities. As a regular listener to both the English and Spanish programs, I believe that KPFK 90.7 is the only station in California offering professional, objective and essential information, commentary and programming for everyone. Working with Rubén Tapia on Nuestra Voz has convinced me that culture, music and impartial information are key to attracting Spanish-speaking listeners, who are a rapidly growing community throughout the state. And the fight for peace continues!
I live in South Los Angeles. As a trans-border educator, anthropologist and independent scholar, I have been listening to KPFK in both English and Spanish for many years. In 2022, I completed a six-month training course in radio production and editing with Rubén Tapia from the Spanish-language programming team. Since then, I have co-hosted Nuestra Voz, handling research, editing, local and international interviews, and fundraising efforts with participants and listeners. In October 2023, we launched the only local and international coverage of the war in the Middle East in Spanish, taking an objective, impartial and secular approach focused on peace. I am committed to dedicating all my resources to ensuring the smooth operation of KPFK, resolving technical and communication issues, and engaging with regional listener communities. In other words, I am dedicated to growing our audience and securing resources to reaffirm the role of radio as a tool in the struggle for local, national and international peace.

Listeners, staff, volunteers, programmers, and communities have sustained this station for more than 60 years and I acknowledge the responsibility of the position.
I been an activist for immigrant community rights, its welfare, and the power of knowledge for many years since arriving to Los Angeles from Mexico.
I’m very familiar with the struggles of our working community from the very beginning, in many aspects of economical, educational, integration and quality of life issues, and have been working with many organizations to offer and contribute to practical solutions.
As a founder member of Alerta Los Angeles, Alerta Cali and other social media groups, I been involved on several projects of information and awareness previous to the implementation of AB-60 legislation allowing undocumented individuals to drive legally, where police departments turned DUI checkpoints into costly interactions, vehicle impound schemes, and illegal driver detentions, while active campaign and supporting efforts to bring to passage and approval of such positive legislation that has benefited millions of members of our working community.
As a Spanish-language broadcaster for more than 10 years and as a Local Station Board member at KPFK, I am aware of the unique role Pacifica plays in amplifying voices of community members, activists and social fighters not allowed in commercial media, while creating space for dialogue, culture,music, education, and resources, and where overlooked communities can tell their own stories in their own words.
I believe Pacifica’s future depends on not forgetting our founding principles, allowing even dissenting voices and meaningful participation.
Remembering that Democracy is not only about governance structures and with its own set of challenges, but also about ensuring that listeners, staff, volunteers, programmers, and community members have a voice in the future of our radio station and the Pacifica Foundation they support and sustain.
Even if recent bylaws changes have left small spaces for action, I will advocate for transparent governance, financial accountability and outreach to our multilingual communities.

KPFT’s transmitter/tower bombing took place just outside Houston city limits, an excuse for the Houston Police not to investigate, but there were Klu Klux Klan members in the police force and reportedly STILL ARE ! KPFT kept the story alive, and the F.B.I. came ~2 years later, and brought the bomber to court. The bomber told that he was most proud of his bombing action.
I believe the Local Station Board must CREATE TOGETHER WITH THE COMMUNITY FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL and FOR THE FUTURE !

In 2020 and 2021 on the PNB Programming Committee, I got to work with great Pacifica activists members delightfully designing a local Programming Committee connecting with the community students, teachers, non-LSBs, to expand with visuals, captions, translations: MULTI- MEDIA ! COME ON PACIFICA !
Who is Nancy Saibara Naritomi ?
Born and raised in Pasadena, Texas, an oil refinery suburb of Houston, where I never saw a black person. I found out later that Pasadena was the KKK headquarters, but never heard of KPFT until 2008, after living 27 years in Japan, the last 4 in my car, after suing a Japanese husband and his mistress, during which I dismissed my lawyer, hired a translator, and represented myself in the High and Supreme Court appeals in Japan.
A Japanese court decides if a mistress is a legal or an illegal mistress, because they have both! I could not win child custody, although some foreign wives married to a yakuza/gangster COULD WIN child custody, but the husband was not a gangster. I won compensation from both the husband and mistress which was rare.
In Japan I enjoyed teaching English conversation, got toddlers to speak, sing and read English BEFORE they were able to do so in Japanese! I refused men in the ladies’ classes: one man in the room and the ladies clam up!
If only Japanese women had a Pacifica radio station culture…
I also enjoyed making anti-war speeches about wars in Afghanistan and in Iran in my strange Japanese delivery while my comrades (teachers) distributed leaflets. People asked if I just stepped off the boat. Japanese police tried to stop me, and I fired back that there is no sign saying Bush supporters only allowed in this train station ! Lucky for me, Japanese police hesitate to harass a US citizen.
WBAI: There are two candidates within the coalition for most positions (alphabetically by last name for each office):

I was introduced to WBAI over 30 years ago as a student activist ready to follow in the footsteps of people like Elombe Brath, one of my elder mentors at that time, whose consistent and long-standing example of scholarship and service to African Liberation led me to a role in community media. In my first truly empowering role as an independent producer of the Bronx-based Public Access show, The Melanin Chronicles, I learned the disciplines of journalism and activism. With that exposure in mind, I appreciate the management of the noble legacy of WBAI and that’s why I hope to keep serving the Local Station Board as its Chair.
WBAI has been an integral part of my media consumption since my early realizations that the American corporate press did not have a track record of serving the Working Class, nor were the Ruling Class owner/operators of their media machines likely to ever change the systemic impact to enable the forces of oppression. In this respect, the mission of WBAI has been very close to my professional, social, political, cultural and even economic intentions to undermine the colonial American forces of White Supremacist Patriarchy and Imperialist war-making.
Of late, my role as a listener and as a member of the Local Station Board has found me less than satisfied with the lack of developing ways that Pacifica meets increasingly popular technical demands among our Working Class non-corporate media consumers. I would like to help usher in a new age of technical and programming effectiveness for the WBAI listeners in the New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania Tri-State Area. I believe that a new look at how Terrestrial Radio can incorporate Internet-based video content would be more purposeful and may bring increased listener interest, engagement and a membership population that’s more financially committed.
I hope, as the Chair of our Local Station Board, that I can work with our other board members to evolve independent “Peace and Justice Radio”.

I am seeking election, as an Indy, to once again serve as Local Station Board Chair. That’s because I want to see WBAI grow and thrive as a listener accountable station, grass-roots pluralism style. We need to offer wide-ranging counter-narratives to what is destructively presented as “public discourse” in the corporately owned and funded media. Free speech is essential to our mission and I reject top-down, prescriptive, and insidious overrides of it. WBAI should provide information and insight that the monied interests controlling the media and the internet are burying. I envision WBAI as a discovery porthole through which listeners can discover what they are unlikely to discover elsewhere so they can understand our world, the past, and our possible futures.
The station needs to cover more territory more efficiently and engage more listeners. Alternative media is fast replacing legacy media, and WBAI needs to return to leadership in this regard. With attention grabbing content, the station could be less easy to pigeonhole as predictable, and less susceptible to caricature.
Technological update, particularly as the station reflects itself on the internet (before the internet may be further shut down) affords opportunities for extra content. Content could overflow to second-channel (or even third-channel) HD broadcast programming now possible with our still unused HD antenna; it could be coordinated with second- and third-channel streaming on the internet, and podcast and internet availability of content. Provision for such integrated overflow (like “Web Exclusives”) could allow WBAI to better address local news. It could allow for “farm team” development of new talent, concepts and approaches and could avoid demise of sometimes beloved shows struggling with low ratings. It could be a haven for expansion of WBAI’s often lucrative music programming. . WBAI’s various parts could be more cohesively integrated and cross-supporting.
On-the-street solicitation along with more man-on-the-street interactions, could have the benefit of raising awareness about the station and its programming. Along with more event-connected solicitations, (often highly valued by younger cohorts) those approaches could result in funds from new members who may get added to the listener base. It also involves two-way conversations that would provide valuable feedback about the station’s possibilities and potential.
We should also understand and more intuitively appreciate the value and community building aspects of real time live radio. Let me reiterate: We are living, breathing, real people living in real time and, there is always a special magic and bond that comes from sharing and participating communally in live real time events: terrestrial real time radio and live events are two examples.
I am an activist cofounder of Citizen’s Defending Libraries who writes on many topics concerning our freedoms. That’s come after my quarter century plus working as a lawyer in public finance, affordable housing, etc. with an urban planing background during which I ran the legal department for the state finance agencies.

Pacifica Bylaws (2020)(1)(B)(2)(i) state: … proposed amendment(s) must be approved by the majority of all Directors on the Board and by the majority vote of all the Delegates of at least three of the Foundation radio stations. … This procedure was not followed before a careless court order imposed without member approval the 2025 “settlement” Bylaws. I have been a peace activist from the age of 7, when I supported my local draft dodger big brother against the wrath of our parents. Vice Chair: Denise Joyce
My name is Denise Joyce. I’m a long-standing listener and supporter of WBAI. I originally intended to run for, Outreach Coordinator. But I was asked to run for the Local Station Board, V.C. I currently served as the, WBAI Community Advisory Board, V.C. I am a skilled communicator, who has worked in customer service and public relations for many years. In volunteering and speaking with many, wBAI listeners, I find that to many listeners express a feeling of not being heard or being appreciated. While these claims are not entirely accurate, they do have a degree of Merit.
If I serve on the LSB, I will make every effort to create an environment where listeners can interact with appropriate individuals, who can resolve repeated concerns. That is one of the issues I’d like to help resolve. Much of my professional life was devoted to assisting clients in resolving credit card disputes and fraud investigation claims. However, I switched from the banking industry to the Hotel Hospitality Industry where I entered several union locals. I would like to enlist as many union workers as possible to become WBAI Annual Members or BAI Monthly Buddies. If I win the LSB V.C. post, I will encourage my associates to pursue that endeavor. Either way, it’s due time for, WBAI Members to focus on encouraging our union members to become part of the WBAI Family.

I was born in a tornado shelter in Alva, Oklahoma, not because there was a tornado overhead, but because that’s where my family was living at the time. That’s not my whole story, but I carry a life-long loyalty to my working-class roots.
I stumbled upon WBAI in 1973, up late studying to become a PA (Physician’s Associate) in Brooklyn. I volunteered at the church in the East 60’s. I’ve been a Listener-Member on and off ever since, continuously since the Shut-Down of BAI in 2019.
I want to address the sectarian divide at WBAI’s LSB over Identity Politics.
There is a basic conundrum the whole world is facing. The ultimate truth (that which is unchanging) is that there is one human race on Earth. Against a white background (snow), species turn white: bears, foxes, and humans. It’s a natural process, having to do with camouflage, mosquitoes, and Vitamin D. On the other hand, the everyday material reality truth is that, at every life phase, “People of Color” face increased suffering: oppression, sickness, injury, early death, due to the delusion of “white supremacy.”
How do we reconcile these contradictory truths? I attended an anti-racist workshop out of Spirit Rock, a Buddhist center near San Francisco, lots of zoom break-out rooms, and we came up with an answer. What we actually have are not different races, but different “racial location memories.” These are powerful experiences when we are very young, when we are told we belong to this or that racial group. It usually takes 3 or 4 of these memories for this unnatural “lesson” to stick, because as young children, we come with an innocence we will never get back until we face the Great Mystery again. These memories are usually painful for “Persons of Color,” and can be a relief for persons labelled “White.” That is also hard to admit.
I believe that Identity Politics was a phase we had to go through. Women had to separate from men to listen to each other, value each other, develop our leadership capabilities. I think the process was similar for “Persons of Color” after Stokely Carmichael kicked the “white” people out of SNCC in 1966.
However, fast forward to today: we had built a huge movement in the 60’s and early 70’s. We ended an imperialist war. By the late 70’s and 80’s, we were all silo’ed into our identity groups, no longer really effective at anything we tried to do outside of the traditional party structure. That was no accident then and is no accident today.
My basic politics will always be “Black and White Unite and Fight.” I have no problem with people who feel more comfortable with Identity Politics; however, I oppose people who weaponize Identity Politics for personal gain, whether to control a group, revenge a deep life wound, or for more traditional gains, money and position.
So, during this transition period, let’s keep up the conversation, and get through it!

I seek election for the Outreach Coordinator position at the WBAI Local Station Board because I want to continue working on getting the word out about the benefits of this station to the people in the listening area I’ve been working as Chair of the LSB Outreach and Fundraising Taskforce (LOFT) for the pass year and am ready to formalize my role. During this period of time, we have distributed hundreds of flyers during street fairs and other events, such as DemocracyNow’s event at the Riverside Church
I am a New Jersey-based Pan-Africanist and trained project manager. As an LSB member, I’ve drawn upon skills and knowledge acquired from a varied professional and community background, including:
• active membership in the People’s Organization for Progress (POP).
• working with community organizations to develop re-entry programs for the formerly incarcerated
• as a member of the Tri-State Save “Like It Is” Coalition, challenging the renewal of the four TV networks’ FCC licenses
• functioning on various professional levels in college, corporate, local government, and nonprofit environments.
Community Outreach Coordinator: Chuck Fall
Hi, I am Chuck Fall from Portland, Oregon, and I am a WBAI listener (over the internet) seeking the WBAI Outreach Coordinator position. I am running for the position to support independent radio and help preserve its community-based, democratic origins and, most importantly, help sustain its financial independence by expanding outreach.
I have a bachelor of arts in English literature and a master’s in teaching. I have a media background, having written for the college newspaper. Later in life I volunteered at KBOO Community Radio in Portland. There I saw what it takes to produce radio.
I have worked as a teacher, a waiter, and a workers’ compensation claims representative. My last job was selling residential solar.
I ran for state representative to the Oregon legislature on the Green Party ticket but did not get elected.
Now I am retired but active in the Truth Action Project, a volunteer-run activist group that advances an independent media perspective through a weekly TAP Talk public forum. We bring in experts to speak to our political truth community on a range of topics. We hold meetings on Zoom and have weekly discussions.
I support WBAI and all independent, Pacifica-based radio programming. This important media network provides us with an independent voice our democracy needs to survive.
More than anything, I look forward to working with the team at WBAI to advance the station mission to provide independent radio.
As a retiree I have time to dedicate to helping preserve and sustain the cause of independent radio. I sincerely believe our society is at risk of losing key fundamental freedoms; our First Amendment rights to speech and to publish are threatened, both of which are key to communicating and petitioning our right to seek redress for grievances.
Chiefly, among many grievances that need petitioning, is the grievance that our ruling class put our country on the path of empire. Opposing war is key to reclaiming community and democratic agency.
As an activist in the political truth community, I am aware that our government and corporations actively deceive us with big lies. For example, in 2003, Colin Powell, in his role as secretary of state, lied in front of the United Nations about why NATO needed to go to war against Saddam Hussein of Iraq. People around the country assembled to protest the contrived war; nevertheless, the United States Congress approved a war based on a big lie that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The capacity of the powerful to act with impunity has only gotten worse.
Our society needs independent radio more than ever. More voices / participation from the membership and listening body can empower independent media.
Through radio programs that expose the corruption, like Uncontrolled Opposition, we can mount resistance by raising awareness about what is going on in society. I support independent media and the Pacifica radio network and request your vote for me to be the next outreach coordinator for WBAI.
Membership/Fundraising Coordinator: Jack de Palma
My name is Jack DePalma.
I am a listener candidate for the WBAI Fundraising and Membership Coordinator position and would serve, if elected, for a three-year term on the 2027 WBAI Local Station Board (LSB). This year’s Pacifica Foundation elections are designed to elect listener-members and staff to newly created positions while eliminating others positions on a refashioned Pacifica National and Local governing boards. Listener-members from WBAI will vote for both National Board officers and for listeners who will represent WBAI on the Listener Sponsored Board (LSB). Staff members can vote for staff candidates and listener members can vote only for listener candidates. Now KPFA, KPFK, KPFT, WBAI and WPFW listener-members will together all vote for a National Governance Board of officers; and their Local Station Board officers and listener-representatives as well. Sudden changes can be confusing. I am dedicated to helping WBAI thrive by working to get more listener-members. I am determined to help keep the Pacifica Foundation radio network moving forward on its mission.
I am a 50-year long-time listener, a member of past Local Station Boards, and a long time Community Advisory Board member as well as a member of the WBAI Finance Committee for ten years. I know the radio station well. I also spent past years as a volunteer. When Hurricane Sandy flooded the basement at 120 Wall St., WBAI needed to vacate and move to its current location in downtown Brooklyn. I worked together with other volunteers and WBAI staff to pack boxes and equipment to help move WBAI off Wall Street. My support for WBAI over many years has allowed me to see most of the radio station from the inside. Most days I listen from 7 AM until 8 PM and am gratified to see the many important, positive and recent changes at WBAI and with the many affiliated radio outlets which now are a part of a vibrant Pacifica family. We together represent a nation-wide news, entertainment and educational organization. WBAI (wbai.org) is a 24-hour international resource with online streaming and archives.
I know and value the Pacifica Mission as illustrated by my support through the years for WBAI. As a listener, I have learned from the diversity of ideas presented as well as enjoying different music genres that were introduced by radio WBAI. My longtime listening, volunteer experiences, participation in the LSB, CAB and Finance Committee make me uniquely qualified to represent listeners on WBAI Local Station Board as the Fund Raising and Membership Coordinator.
I know and respect the Pacifica mission and highly value the new spirit at WBAI. Member supporters expect transparency and honesty from both Pacifica and WBAI; so I will work to promote it and to maintain improved communications between listeners and the station.

As a 45+ year WBAI producer, and at least 28 years as paid staff, I believe I am a good candidate to serve, yet again, on the WBAI LSB. I have served on the Local Station board on and off for several terms over the years as a staff representative.
In decades past, I have been elected as a member of the WBAI Program Council as a representative of Arts Department (remember when had departments, and a STAFF??), who, in collaboration with the Program Director, set policies for program evaluations, assessed the station’s needs, and brought new programs to the air.
I currently produce two programs for WBAI, the long-running GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO (since 1977 as producer, 1978 as host), which currently brings about 30 Buddies who support the station, and an overnight show of radio drama, humor, and social commentary called THE DUSTBIN OF HISTORY. I also facilitate A MANSION FOR THE RAT with Ann Marie Hendrickson. I maintain a strong Facebook presence to promote these programs as well. I also edit audio for Mimi Rosenberg’s programs – Building Bridges and Equal Rights and Justice, and produce and upload her national programs as well.
As the evening and overnight broadcast engineer, I ensure that live programs run smoothly, and that pre-recorded programs are downloaded, fixed up, and programmed to run on schedule from midnight until dawn when the next engineer is on board. These duties generally extend well beyond my paid hours.
I’ve seen much over the decades. I know what will work and what won’t, despite the same ideas for fund-raising coming up with every new crop of LSB members. I hope to once again be able to share that knowledge and help to salvage our radio station!

Chair: Herbert Smith
I believe I could achieve something good as the chair of the WPFW Radio Station Board. I am inclined to believe that this could be possible because my mind is most often beyond the proverbially normal and conventional thoughts outside of the boxes. Additionally, I also subscribe to the notions that the mothers of inventions are due to accidents or the conditions of necessity.
In regards to operational strategies I first identify the missions and goals to be accomplished and how best to achieve them. Secondly, I might identify the individuals and their strengths in accomplishing the assigned tasks at the same time maintaining the spirit of teamwork. Throughout this approach I am mindful of a history that works and of a history that does not. One could say throughout this approach I am in essence improvising.
The saying that to whom much is given much is to be expected has always been an important principle by which I’ve attempted to guide the purposes of my life. This saying has also provided me with the reasons and justification for which I feel obligated to give back; for the opportunities and privileges afforded me as we exist in a world in need of desperate humane, visionary, and progressive change. I am humbly volunteering to offer my energy, knowledge, and wisdom to assist and support Radio Station WPFW a profoundly, unique, and critically important organization to the survival of oppressed and marginalized communities and peoples. The support again I am most humbly offering is to become chair of WPFW’S local station board.
Though there are for certain some within the WPFW Family whom might not be familiar with my work and history I offer somewhat of a biographical sketch of my history and philosophy. In regards to my history I have principally been known as a professor of music for the last fifty years within higher education while at the same time maintaining a career as a performing jazz artist and lecturer on the history and aesthetics of jazz. For many the intersections within jazz of its political, cultural, and aesthetic aspects is often a most difficult task but in the final analysis is most beneficial and rewarding for those who accept the intellectual and spiritual challenges that fully understanding the meaning of jazz requires. And so, due to its complex intersectionality’s, I often declare that jazz is the most profound expression of the peoples of the African diaspora.
Throughout my career as a professor and musician I have had to unapologetically make the case for not only the power, the importance, and the beauty of the arts but, most fundamentally the rights and freedom of all people to live within a just and equal society. And so, for me the person, the struggle, and the challenges of jazz represents the challenges of life itself.

Herbert A. Smith Born in Decatur, Alabama in 1942, raised from age two in Memphis, Tennessee—a city known for its blues, gospel, and jazz and principal home for WC Handy, (Father Of The Blues). Also, home of B.B. King, (Beale Street Blues Boy) and birthplace of Charlie Parker, Aretha Franklin, and Stax Records. Attended Manassas High School where legendary musician Jimmy Lunceford, the authentic King of Swing, was once a teacher, and where other legendary musicians such as Gerald Wilson, Sonny Chris, George Coleman, Hank Crawford, Frank Strozier, Booker Little, Harold Mabern, Charles Lloyd, and Isaac Hayes emerged as students. Jazz great Miles Davis was so impressed that he proclaimed Manassas High School in Memphis Tennessee the greatest jazz school ever.

My name is Michelle Thomas; I am a candidate for the office of WPFW – FM LSB Vice Chair seeking your vote in the 2027 Pacifica Local Station Election.
I began listening to WPFW – FM when I moved to the District of Columbia in 1994. I recognized in 2025 that I am a Super Listener of WPFW – FM and other radio station programs.
We Need More Than Ever a Strong Public Radio Station Rooted in Community
Let me introduce myself and share my qualifications to perform in the role of LSB Vice Chair in 2027. I received an excellent education in NYC Public Schools and from my direct participation in social movements during the mid 1960’s – late 1980’s. In college I produced and hosted a Jazz + Soul Radio Program, on WVKW. I worked four years as a Science Researcher before attending medical school. I remained active in many organizations and campaigns against Police Brutality, in opposition to War, in promotion of Human Rights, in support of Anti Colonial Struggles and chronicled Healthcare Disparities in the African American Community during the11 years of medical training.
I worked as a Trauma Surgeon at DC General Hospital until it closed. I worked at Hadley Hospital as a Critical Care MD, I had private practice in Prince Georges County MD. I am past President of PG Society of Health Professionals (NMA), we raise significant annual funds for the Dr. Henry Wise Scholarship. I have been a Health Information Resource for the cable television CTV- MD, produced and hosted a 30-minute TV program “Health Access”.
In 2025 I realized that my WPFW membership required more than a larger monetary donation. Hence, I began to attend WPFW sponsored community events, the 5K Run-Walk, 2025 Home Rule Music Festival, Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival, Community Town Hall Meetings. I wanted to understand the relation of community to the radio station. I must state there is not enough Community in Public Radio and not enough Radio in Community. There are human and digital solutions to improve community WPFW relations. WPFW has increased membership, but too many folks see themselves as donors. We must solve this problem if we want to be relevant.
I thought it important to understand the strategic plan of WPFW leadership, the mechanics of the LSB so that I could “dovetail” my help. In the past 6 months I have attended all public LSB, Finance, and two Outreach Committee meetings. I will attend the next public Programmer’s Committee meeting.
Great News! WPFW Financials are Solid and LSB has Dedicated Members. When Community comment opened some of my suggestions were received with enthusiasm.

Secretary: Dr. Jawara Hunter
I am running as a candidate for Secretary of the WPFW local station board. My appreciation and support of WPFW began in 1977 when I began matriculation at the Howard University College of Medicine. As this station has been a beacon of light in the wasteland of what currently can only be considered a juggernaut of dumbing down propaganda, it is vital that we maintain its mission of Jazz and Justice. Many forces work to confuse the residents of the District of Columbia as it remains one of the most politically powerful and important cities in the world. WPFW has been resolute in providing as much truth and justice as we can for almost 50 years.
As a member of the Local Station Board and specifically as the Secretary I would ensure the highest level of communication and transparency. Because truth be told, it will be the optimizing of communication as well as vigorous, collegial dialogue that will allow us to survive into the next years and beyond. Our deliberations and collective decision making will rely on objective facts and the implications of the decisions made with the information will either help us to thrive or not. I take great pride in stating like some of our Indigenous communities posit that we make decisions based on our best thinking, and that the implications of our decisions will impact our families for seven generations into the future.
I feel that a secretary is more than a recorder of information, I also plan to be one who strives for consensus in an acknowledged community landscape with intelligent and committed people who have many very strong and heartfelt opinions in a city and country that is oft times purposefully made confusing and divisive. In concert with a strong Local Board Chair and Vice Chair my role as Secretary would be one of collective, transparent capturing of board meetings and prompt and timely dissemination of materials to the board members.
I was a local station board member in the 1990s and am currently a local station board member. We are a station that needs collaboration focused on a minimizing of differences and a maximal intentionality of team work and collective work based on a shared vision so that WPFW continues to thrive into the future. Please consider voting for my candidacy to make our station stronger.
Staff and Volunteer Team Representative: Ron Pinchback
My name is Ronald Pinchback and I am a candidate to become staff representative on the new WPFW LSB.
I have had the honor, privilege and pleasure to serve WPFW for more than 3 decades. My roles included GM, PD, PNB Rep, LSB Rep and Local Advisory Board Rep. I am currently on staff as a programmer hosting and producing the community comment show Friday mornings.
Pacifica is establishing new guidelines for governing the network. It is vital that we understand what those changes are and how to navigate the developing landscape. That is why having effective representation is so important. The volunteer and paid staff are the backbone of WPFW as well as the other stations in the network.
They all deserve to be informed, encouraged and respected.
If elected, I will serve with that perspective.
WPFW has a long and valuable relationship with the Washington community thanks to the many talented programmers, producers volunteers and paid staff contributing to the station’s success.

Ambrose Lane, Jr., (currently listed as running for PNB staff rep; he is NOT endorsed for that position)
Ambrose Lane, Jr. is a known long-time activist and community builder in the District of Columbia. Over 25 years of leadership experience as an effective organizer and executive, working directly with youth, elected officials, community leaders and businesses.
Since 2013, Mr. Lane organized, founded and is the current Chairman of the Health Alliance Network, the strongest and largest DC community-based health advocacy group, to advocate for residents of poor and low-income communities and seniors in Wards 7, 5, 4, 1 & 8, the issues of health equity, population health policy, chronic disease prevention strategies and the need for a “change in community health culture” to bring about healthy and thriving communities. He is a Co-founder and former Board member of the Black Coalition Against Covid (BCAC), addressing Coronavirus concerns, policy and impact for Black communities, and founder of the Opioid Solutions Working group, a group of 26 organizations dedicated to community solutions to the current Opioid crisis. He has assisted in the writing of past DC Council health legislation on Health Impact Assessments (HIA’s).
Mr. Lane was selected by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to serve two terms as a Commissioner for the DC Commission on Health Equity, his term ending in 2022. In 2023, Mr. Lane was selected to serve on the Mayor’s Commission on Poverty, and in 2022, became founder and is current President of Million Man Vote, an organization dedicated to voter registration.
He serves on the Boards of several DC CBO’s. Ambrose is currently a public affairs radio show host at WPFW, married to Dr. Nura Green Lane and is a father of four.
Note: The Bylaws adopted via a court settlement without the required member approval have disempowered the local station boards, eliminating all local oversight of finances, management and programming. We are protesting and seeking to reverse this improper and self-destructive action.
